CVEs and Sustaining Functions of On-line Tutorship

چکیده
The impact of Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs) on communities’ development is a topic still rather unexplored. All the interaction processes mediated by these technological environments are characterised, from both psychosocial and discursive points of view, by absolutely new practices and by the absence of some communication features, typical of face-to face. The “Community of Practice” model, allows us to analyse the growth of virtual communities along the construction of a shared repertoire, the involvement in a common enterprise and the sharing of a mutual engagement. Communities of practice use technology in social and material contexts, sharing meanings about the technology uses and peculiarities through a continuous negotiating process. The analysis is aimed at describing how a community of practice is established in a virtual world where both textual and graphical interactions are allowed. Conversational and quantitative results show: a) how the community of practice evolves over the time, b) the specificity of the interactions mediated by the virtual environment; c) the role of different participants in the management of discourse in interaction, with a detailed analysis of the on-line tutorship impact on the development of the community.

Collaborative Virtual Environments - Hype or Hope for CSCW?
Due to recent technology advancements, collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) where users can interact and collaborate via avatars in 3Dworlds have becomemore and more common in home and professional usage. This paper discusses these newly upcoming tools from a CSCW perspective. We show that current CVEs can be seen as integrated environments that serve many (though not all) of the functions...
متن کاملSynchronous Tutoring of a Virtual Community
The role of tutors has changed over time, depending on models of learning and on the technology available. This paper discusses the evolution of the tutor role and presents a new model concerning the tutoring of a virtual community. The definition of a virtual community starts from a theory of communities of learning and takes the features of the virtual environment into account. A project in w...
متن کاملKeeping in Touch: Agents Reporting from Collaborative Virtual Environments
Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs) are virtual worlds providing real−time 3D graphics, supplemented with text and/or audio to multiple users over computer networks [Benford et al, 2001]. Over the past decade, there has been a growing interest in using CVEs for on−line gaming, arts, performances and entertainment [e.g. Ultima, 2001, Benford et al., 2000, Greenhalgh et al., 1999]. One prob...
متن کاملOptimal Latency in Collaborative Virtual Environment to Increase User Performance: A Survey
In this paper we evaluate Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs) in terms of network latency. Network Latency main requirements, given in the literature for CVEs, have been summarized. We also discuss effects of network latency on users’ performance in the CVEs. Different factors can improve, by minimizing overall network latency, the performance of users in the CVEs. This review provides a ...
